In the summer of 2008, at the age of 17, I spent six weeks volunteering as an English teacher in Western Africa. For most of my time, I taught English at Adom School in the village of Darkuman, just outside of Ghana’s capitol, Accra.
Before Adom School was founded by Faustina Agyeiwaa in 1991, the children of Darkuman had no schooling whatsoever.
Faustina has dedicated her life to Darkuman’s children so they don’t succumb to the fate of their parents, many of whom are illiterate. I produced a documentary video to raise money to build a desperately needed larger school building.
