School for Kids of Kathmandu

In 2007, at the age of 16, I accepted a journalism and humanitarian internship Kathmandu, Nepal. For five weeks, I was blessed to live with two incredible Nepali children, Sujan and Sabita. My host family took in these homeless children and their mothers, but could not afford to send them to school.

Sujan and Sabita are of the lowest caste, and are disregarded by society. Before I left Nepal, I paid for their tuition for one year. Tuition costs several hundred dollars a year, but one year of education is not enough. I am sponsoring their education through 12th grade and and have expanded my charity to include more children.

  1. When Sujan walked into the kitchen, wearing his starched blue school uniform, everyone grew silent. It is difficult to explain the feeling I had, to witness a little boy’s life change before my eyes. Without an education, Sabita would be sold into an arranged marriage within the next few years and Sujan would suffer the life of an untouchable. But an education will change this.

We are all human. We are all interconnected. Perhaps tonight, a little Nepali boy and girl will fall asleep knowing that although today they may go hungry, tomorrow may bring hope. Perhaps tonight, you may fall asleep with the realization that you have, in fact, changed someone’s life.

So please, change a life. Donate to my charity. I thank you, and most importantly, the children thank you.

Namaste and may peace be with you,
Sophie
